How Gardening with Grandma as a Child Brings Writing Success Today
Weeding and working in the garden makes words pop up...
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had a passion for writing. And not just a passion, but a burning desire. The words that stir in my heart and soul simply must find a way to escape; they have to be released from within.
But looking back, I realize I also had another passion – to watch things grow. Ironically, as I grew a little older (pre-teen/teen) I found I didn’t like getting sweaty and dirty. That didn’t hinder the happy memories of gathering green beans and new potatoes with my grandma, though.
And my gardening days were far from over…
Cultivating a Desire to Grow My Own Produce
In my twenties, I battled illness and surgeries. Doctors expected the worse. I turned to raw, living foods, juices, and smoothies to pump nourishment into my body. It didn’t take long to recognize the power of freshly grown veggies and fruits.
As my body began to heal, I found myself reflecting on those days with grandma. Days when we’d snap green beans or pick juicy tomatoes. Days when we’d nibble our way through sweet banana peppers and even the plums off her tree.
Not only was that fresh food healthy, so was the sunshine, the exercise, and most importantly – the gardening partner.
I knew I needed to garden again. My passion for raw, living foods -- and the desire for that harmonious peace I found with grandma in the garden -- brought me full circle and led me back to gardening.
Gardener Meets Writing Success
I was elated when the opportunity came along to write for a Mainline Gardening! Now I can pour out my heart and soul, letting all those thriving words run free.
Grandma gardens from Heaven now but I know she’s looking down on me, smiling as my two passions collide. As my writing career grows, so does my gardening career. Life can’t get any sweeter than that. Not for this gardening writer anyway.
Thank you, grandma!
Do you remember gardening with a parent or grandparent – or some other special person or friend? Did someone inspire your career? Who played a huge part in who you are today?

My mother was a wonderful story teller and I am very pleased that she shared her talent with you. Please, always let your feelings flow through your pen and make your Grandma very proud.. May 20, 2011, 10:14 pmShawna says:Michele, you are so talented! I'd love to read more about your gardening experiences. I've always wanted to try, but I don't know the first thing. And people like you who have the experience and the "green thumb" always say, "Oh, you should do it! It's so easy!" But for someone like me, who truly doesn't know where to begin, it's really not easy. For a person with adult ADD, starting something new can be almost impossible without the tools and direction! So if you have any web site suggestions/blogs/etc., I'm very interested. I've thought about planting tomatoes in pots or something like that. But it would have to be cheap for me to be able to do it! Here are my favorite lines from your post: "My passion for raw, living foods -- and the desire for that harmonious peace I found with grandma in the garden -- brought me full circle and led me back to gardening." "Now I can pour out my heart and soul, letting all those thriving words run free." "Grandma gardens from Heaven now but I know she’s looking down on me, smiling as my two passions collide."Log in to reply -
