Grandma's Washtub Transformed
I have vivid memories of an old washtub. It belonged to my grandma. On scorching hot days, she’d fill it with cool water from the hose and let me play in it. It was like my own little swimming pool – just super small. Of course, I was small so it was just right for cooling off and playing.
“A lot of people used these washtubs for bathtubs in the old days,” she’d say, “and for laundry, too.” I couldn’t imagine that little tub being used for laundry and baths. Funny how times change, isn’t it?
The other day I spotted a rusty old washtub leaning against a building. I immediately had a vision and knew just what I’d use it for.
“Will you sell that old washtub to me?” I asked the man. “Make an offer,” he said. And I did.
That washtub is now mine. As you can see from the photo, I brought it home and filled it with potting soil. Then I planted spinach and basil seeds.
As I hold the watering can over the washtub allowing that stream of water to saturate the soil, I can’t stop thinking about grandma, her washtub, her stories, or how she filled that old tub with cool water – water that was so refreshing.
Sitting in that tub of cool water as a kid makes me think of the scripture in John chapter 4 that talks about water and everlasting life.
13) Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14) But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. – John 4:13,14
Although the cool water from the hose was nothing in comparison to God’s spirit or everlasting life, it was refreshing to sit in that old round tub on a humid day. Such fond memories of time spent with my grandma and the special things she’d do for me….
Like grandma, God wants to do special things for us. He wants us to climb in, soak it up, and be refreshed. Isn’t that nice?
Have you drank from God’s water fountain? Have you sat in the Lord’s washtub and experienced that refreshing, cool feeling? Do you remember your grandma’s washtub? Perhaps your own?

Unfortunately, when I moved recently, I couldn't take it with me so it was left for the new tenant to enjoy. When I find another old wash tub to plant something in, I will think of this post and how inspiring it is! Thanks!!!Log in to reply -

I love this scripture. :-) Living in the parched desert of Arizona now, I think alot about the refreshing waterfalls I use to visit and photograph while I lived in Oregon. I love how Jesus used water so much in his parables. I liked how you used the water from your bath in conjunction with John 4:13-14. :-)Log in to reply -

May 14, 2011, 7:01 pmTammy Mommy says:Thanks for reminding me of my grandma, today, Michele. She didn't give us baths in washtubs, but she taught me to enjoy many other simple pleasures. I think it's adorable that you bought the rusty tub, too! I have tasted of that spring, but I admit that lately I've really let other concerns get in the way of my being truly refreshed by it. Again, thanks for the reminder.Log in to reply -
May 14, 2011, 7:28 pmMichele Tune says:You're most welcome, Tammy. You know, I'm drawn to things and ways of the old days; the old path. My grandma was truly my best friend. I adored her and she was such a significant role model in my life. She not only taught me old-fashioned ways, she taught me the ways of the Lord. I remember so many Sunday mornings how we walked to church together. I always had to wear sandals and a shawl just like grandma.... Life does get hectic, Tammy, but try to take a little time out to drink from that refreshing spring, okay? Thank you so much for reading -- I'm honored that you were blessed by my little reflections. ;-)Log in to reply -
